Customer Advisory: U.S. Rail Closures Due to Labor Negotiations

September 13, 2022

Please be advised that the five U.S. Class 1 freight railroads are meeting with labor unions to reach an agreement on negotiations before the 30-day cooling-off period expires on September 16, 2022.

The railroads have begun taking proactive measures to prepare for possible labor disruptions due to an impasse in labor negotiations. It should be noted that negotiations are continuing, and neither side has authorized a strike or a lockout.

The five Class 1 U.S. railroads have announced the following steps:

  • Union Pacific: Effective Monday, September 12, UP will no longer accept Hazardous Material shipments.
  • BNSF: Effective Monday, September 12, BNSF is no longer accepting Hazardous Material shipments. Effective Wednesday, September 14 at 12:01 AM, BNSF will not allow Temperature Controlled Intermodal (TCI) units to in-gate at any of its intermodal facilities.
  • Norfolk Southern: Effective Monday, September 12, NS will no longer accept Hazardous Material shipments or Special Security shipments. In addition, NS will stop accepting intermodal shipments in-gate effective 12:00 PM Wednesday, September 14, 2022. However, out-gates will remain open for customers to pick up freight.
  • Kansas City Southern: Business continuing as usual.
  • CSX: Has not provided communication at this time.
  • Please note that this does not impact Intra-Canada and Intra-Mexico rail operations.

APL Logistics continues to monitor the situation closely, and we will issue further updates as needed. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your APLL Representative.
