Customer Advisory: British Columbia ILWU Port Strike

Share

November 7, 2024

On November 1, Canada’s International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) issued a 72-hour strike notice. The British Columbia Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) countered with a lockout notice. On Monday, November 4, the ILWU Canada strike and BCMEA lockout began.

Currently, all container terminals are closed until further notice: Centerm, Vanterm, Fairview Terminal Prince Rupert, Fraser Surrey Docks, and DPW Nanaimo. The work stoppage along Canada’s West Coast has also shut down rail operations, with CN suspending westbound rail service to British Columbia ports and CPKC halting acceptance of export and empty containers for the province.

The ongoing labor tensions throughout North America are leading to significant disruptions in cargo flow. Over the past 18 months, six port worker unions across North America have been negotiating contracts. Four of these negotiations have led to severe disruptions, slowing or halting cargo flow at nearly all U.S. ports on the East, Gulf, and West coasts.
