APL Logistics is closely monitoring a fire incident involving the HMM Platinum, which was reported to us by carrier HMM on October 16. According to information received from the carrier, the incident occurred while the vessel was en route from Kattupalli, India, to Santos, Brazil.
Public maritime reports confirm that a fire occurred aboard the HMM Platinum while the vessel was sailing in the Indian Ocean near southern Madagascar. The vessel subsequently sought a port of refuge in South Africa. The extent of damage to the vessel and cargo has not yet been fully determined. TradeWinds reported that all crew members were safe and no injuries had been reported.
Approximately 2,300 containers were reported to be aboard the vessel at the time of the incident. Marine casualty sources have also reported that professional salvors SMIT were engaged under Lloyd's Open Form terms. General Average has been identified by casualty specialists as a possibility; however, we have not identified public confirmation that General Average has been formally declared.
We remain in close contact with the carrier and are awaiting additional information regarding cargo condition, potential operational impacts and the next steps for affected shipments. Customers with cargo aboard the vessel may experience delays while the situation is assessed and arrangements for the vessel and cargo are determined.
APL Logistics will continue to monitor developments and communicate relevant updates as additional confirmed information becomes available.
Thank you for your understanding and continued partnership.
Sincerely,
APL Logistics
