Customer Advisory: ILA Prepares for Strike at East & Gulf Coast Ports
September 6, 2024
The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) is preparing for a strike against the U.S. Maritime Alliance (USMX), which represents maritime employers. The ILA has proposed a 78% increase to their top wage rates in six years, amounting to a $5-per-hour raise annually. Additionally, the union wants contract terms added to protect union jobs against semi-automation and automation at marine terminals.
On Thursday, the ILA appointed thirteen committee heads that will coordinate the mobilization of the strike (starting on October 1) at the U.S. East and Gulf Coast ports – if a new contract is not reached by September 30, 2024, which marks the expiration of their current contract. As of Thursday, no new negotiations have been scheduled between the two groups.
Potential Impact:
- Operational Disruptions: ILA’s strike could lead to disruptions in maritime operations, affecting cargo handling and transportation on the East and Gulf coasts.
- Supply Chain Delays: Delays in cargo movement could result in extended delivery times and increased costs for businesses relying on the East and Gulf Coast ports.
