Customer Advisory: Canadian Government Intervenes in Port Strikes
November 15, 2024
On November 12, Labor Minister Steven MacKinnon directed the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to take action to resolve the labor disputes in Montreal and British Columbia by enforcing binding arbitration. Previously expired longshore contracts will be extended. Binding arbitration will effectively reinstate operations at the ports, aiming to stop further disruptions to Canada’s supply chain network and movement of goods. The British Columbia ports are set to reopen Thursday.
Port dockworkers from both Montreal and British Columbia plan to challenge the government’s orders to return to work and submit to binding arbitration.
